General Projects at the Baca County Fair

At the Fair

General projects are on display in the Minnick Building and open to the public during regular hours
(except during judging)

General Projects in the 4-H Program give youth the chance to explore their interests, build real-world skills, and show what they’ve learned. From cooking and sewing to photography, woodworking, and more, these projects help members grow confidence, creativity, and independence.

Through hands-on learning, record keeping, and interviews, exhibitors gain valuable experience in goal setting, communication, and problem solving—skills that go far beyond the fair.

Whether it’s their first project or their tenth,
4-H members take pride in creating something of their own and sharing it with the community.

General Project Rules & Guidelines

General projects are open to all properly enrolled Baca County 4-H members. Please refer to the full rulebook and State Fair guidelines for complete details.

  1. General Rules Apply – All Baca County Fair rules and Junior Show rules apply to 4-H general projects.

  2. Judging Requirements – Projects are judged on exhibit, record book, and interview. Interviews must be completed in person. Missing the interview makes the project ineligible for placing or State Fair.

  3. Judging System – First (blue ribbon), second (red ribbon), and third (white ribbon) place receive premiums; others receive participation ribbons.

  4. Champions – Grand and Reserve Champion awards are given by project group. Only blue ribbon exhibits are eligible to be project group Champions.

  5. State Fair Eligibility – Only first-place (blue ribbon) exhibits in each unit may advance to the State Fair.

  6. Project Requirements – Exhibitors must follow the Colorado State Fair General Project Requirements Syllabus for each project. Copies are available through club leaders, online, or at the Extension Office.

Tips & Tricks

  1. Easy to Read – Text should be readable from 3–5 feet away. Use large, bold lettering (about 3 inches high for titles).

  2. Use All Space – Design your board using all three sections (center + wings).

  3. Keep It Secure – Attach items firmly. Avoid bulky or heavy materials that could cause the board to fall.

  4. Keep It Simple – Your message should be clear and readable in ~3 minutes.

  5. Tell a Story – Use visuals and layout to clearly show your project story.

  6. Avoid Clutter – Keep the display clean and organized—don’t overcrowd it.

  7. Color Contrast – Use dark text on a light background for best visibility.

  8. Binders – Use a binder or notebook if required (no slider-closure binders)
